October 10th

Math
Since converting between fractions, decimals and percents, we have worked on percent of a number problems.  We have solved using numeric questions such as 35% of 40, and with word problems involving areas of provinces, commission on real estate, and sports related problems.  We then learned about combining percents, using taxes, sales and discounted prices on items in stores.  On Thursday(yesterday) we wrote our Percents Unit Final.  We will begin Chapter 6, Fractional Operations when we return from our Fall Break.

Science
We have learned about the factors that effect solubility through classroom demos and our Fish in a Stream drawing.  They are the type of solute, the type of solvent and temperature.  We also discussed the factors affecting the rate of dissolving.  They are size of the particles, stirring and temperature.  We discussed the Particle Model of Matter and students have been working on an "Atomic Comic",  Students have been creating their own comic in order to demonstrate their understanding of the particle model of matter and how temperature the different states are affected/changed.
When we return from break, students will be creating Cardboard Boats using only cardboard and duct tape.  We will then test these boats as Bob Bahan Pool on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 23rd.  Students can work on their designs and plan on their builds over the break.  Hope to see all our kids faces refreshed and prepared to work when we return.
